Once upon a time, long ago, as that very special decade, the nineteen sixties, floated away on a drifting cloud of patchouli oil scent and joss stick smoke, a teenaged schoolboy discovered poetry.
It was a part of that time of change where the watered down British version of ‘Flower Power’ struggled to compete with less gentle fashion trends as the skinhead look grew in popularity.
No longer was it cool to be nice to people. No longer was handing out flowers - broken leftovers scrounged from florists - normal teenage behaviour. Nor was floating them on the summer surface of the local outdoor public swimming pool to the sounds of The Byrds and The Flowerpot Men… with the encouragement of the kaftan and bead wearing life guards who hailed from California and Australia. The nineteen seventies beckoned.
Already riding a motorcycle to school, and heavily influenced by Fonda and Hopper’s seminal movie, ‘Easy Rider’, the teenager became an art student and the poetry continued. It wasn’t exactly prolific, but it came in bursts. He wasn’t the new Ginsberg, Cohen, McKuen, or McGough, but it did engender a lasting love of words, and proved useful in persuading teenaged girls to take a ride on that pillion seat. The ‘hard’ image of the skinhead wasn’t quite the aphrodisiac that its wearers like to think it was. Sometimes a gentler demeanour wins the day.
